YOUR WEST VALLEY NEWS: SURPRISE TOURNAMENT FEATURES TENNIS GREATS

Fans of former tennis greats are in for a special treat next weekend in Surprise. Tennis legends Jim Courier, Michael Chang, John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova will swing into the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex for the fifth annual Cancer Treatment Centers of America Tennis Championships Oct. 12-13.

Navratilova will make her first appearance in the Surprise event. McEnroe will make his third stop at the event and will open at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 against Courier. At 6 p.m. Oct. 13, Courier will play Martin while McEnroe will take on Chang. Navratilova and Tracy Austin will compete with partners McEnroe and Courier as part of a mixed doubles match Oct. 12.

Surprise is the first of 12 stops on the National PowerShares Series, a competitive tennis circuit for tennis champions over the age of 30.

The two-day tournament also coincides with a craft beer and local food festival called “Ring of Fire” that will run from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex, 14469 W. Paradise Lane. Co-sponsored by Golden Eagle and Sierra Nevada, the event includes samplings from specialty beers brewed along the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire.”

Local cuisine will also be available from Surprise restaurants.

The beer festival includes live entertainment, featuring Ron’s Garage Band with a special appearance by Beth McDonald of 99.9 KEZ and Morning Mayor Dave Pratt. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.

Beer festival tickets also may be purchased between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Surprise Community and Recreation Services office, 15960 N. Bullard Ave. Additional tasting tickets and beer/wine tickets will be available for purchase at the event.

Individuals with tickets to the tennis tournament will get free admission to the beer and food festival. Tennis tickets may be purchased at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex, at www.surpriseaz.com/tennis or by calling Ticketmaster.
