DETROIT FREE PRESS: IVAN LENDL REPLACING JIMMY CONNORS IN LEGENDS TENNNIS EVENT AT PALACE
Ivan Lendl will replace Jimmy Connors in next month’s Champions Classic tennis event at the Palace of Auburn Hills, after Connors was forced to withdraw because of a hip injury.
Lendl will compete against Pete Sampras, John McEnroe and Jim Courier in the PowerShares Series tournament Oct. 18.
“Jimmy’s injury is a shame, and I wish him all the best, as he is one of my favorite competitors on the PowerShares Series,” Lendl said in a released statement. “I know he will work daily on his rehabilitation and come back next year stronger than ever.”
“I am very disappointed that I cannot return to the PowerShares Series later this year,” Connors said in the statement. “I had such a great time last year and was really looking forward to playing with all the guys again. Unfortunately, my hip prohibits me from doing so and I will be out of tennis through the end of 2012. BUT THEN I’M BACK and so looking forward to be part of the future”.
Tickets are on sale at palacenet.com, The Palace and DTE Energy Music Theatre box offices and through Ticketmaster.
The players in what used to be called the Champions Series will be competing for a prize pool of $1 million, to be shared by the top three finishers at the end of the tour.
