Andre Agassi and Jim Courier’s long, winding road to Portland — and friendship
When asked last week about his relationship with Jim Courier, Andre Agassi tried for some very old school locker-room humor. “It’s strictly platonic,” he said, drawing a small, pained groan from Courier.
Of course, platonic would be a huge improvement from their days playing on the ATP tour. Before they squared off in the 1991 French Open final, Courier proudly declared that he and Agassi, his former roommate at Nick Bollettieri’s famed Florida tennis academy, “don’t spend any time together. … In the past, we didn’t even speak.”
