AGASSI TAKES DOWN MCENROE TO WIN IN SAN JOSE POWERSHARES SERIES EVENT
SAN JOSE, CA – Andre Agassi put himself into prime position to make a late run at the 2012 PowerShares Series title by defeating John McEnroe 8-3 in the championship match of the BILT by Agassi and Reyes Champions Showdown, Friday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA in front of a boisterous crowd.
Agassi moved from eighth to fifth in the PowerShares Series rankings with the victory. He trails top-ranked Jim Courier by 900 points with three events remaining. Agassi can overcome both Courier and McEnroe in the race for #1 on the tour with a late season surge in the final events.
“I’m in a good place physically and mentally and I’m ready to do what it takes in the final events to take the season title,” said Agassi. “It’s a thrill to win the event here in San Jose and I’ll be ready for my home event in Las Vegas on Saturday.”
For McEnroe, who defeated Todd Martin in the semifinals, his struggle to notch his second PowerShares Series title of the year continued, as he dropped his sixth consecutive championship match. In the second semifinal Agassi pulled away from Jim Courier to secure the victory with vintage backhand winners en route to a 6-3 triumph to advance to the finals.
The 2012 PowerShares Series returns to action Saturday night, November 17 for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America Championships, presented by 8 News Now in Las Vegas, Nevada, as Andre Agassi plays in front of his hometown crowd at the Mandalay Bay. He will join Michael Chang, Courier and McEnroe when the action gets under way at 7:30 pm.
